Mathias and Brandon join the Olympia community downtown Sept. 11 on Fifth Avenue for the city’s second “A Table for Olympia” gathering. The event featured neighbors’ fresh-cooked entrees, treats and snacks, as well as live music and local art.

Given the relative simplicity and low cost of organizing the event, the guys explore what lessons can be applied to the creation of new community events that bring neighbors together downtown.

Danger Room Comics plays host to Mathias and Brandon’s conversation about neighborhood events and businesses they’d like to bring to downtown Olympia.

The brainstorming session was sparked by the Sept. 11 “A Table for Olympia” gathering on Fifth Street. But the guys take the topic a step further by listing more event ideas aimed at bringing locals together downtown, including a wine tasting crawl and capture the flag competition.

The discussion also moves onto ideas for businesses that could fill niches for local interests, including specialty food stops and coffee lounges for “creatives.”

How should Olympia use its undeveloped property? – einmaleins TV Episode #57

After a response from the Port of Olympia to last week’s discussion about downtown housing, Mathias and Brandon digest the politics and problems with planning East Bay Olympia’s future.

Instead, the guys propose new short-term ideas for the property so that it doesn’t sit unused for 10 years with fencing around it.

Perched along East Bay in downtown Olympia, Mathias Eichler and Brandon Rosage overlook development of what could be the city’s best chance at attractive urban living.

But the vision begs two questions:

1. Will the grand opening of the LOTT clean water education center in East Bay inspire beautiful building in the area?

2. If housing were built, would Olympians hesitate to leave their three-car garages for an urban community?

Mathias drops the gauntlet in Tuesday’s edition of einmaleins TV, asking Brandon to name a must-have downtown Olympia dining experience.

Brandon argues that Olympia’s best eats are the modest spots that don’t call a lot of attention to themselves, like Le Voyeur and Ben Moore’s.

Mathias contends, however, that downtown doesn’t offer the unique experience that draws him out of his home kitchen.

A trip to Mima Mounds has co-host Mathias Eichler asking if Olympia should position itself as visitors’ “basecamp” for experiencing Washington state, thanks to its proximity to everything the Northwest offers.

Co-host Brandon Rosage argues that it places the challenge squarely with Olympia’s residents and business owners, given that larger cities attract visitors to lesser destinations with marketing pushes.
